Carlsen and Karjakin fight at a chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee

MOSCOW, January 14. /TASS/. World champion Magnus Carlsen and Russian GM Sergey Karjakin start on Saturday to speak at the traditional chess super tournament in Wijk aan Zee (the Netherlands).
January in the chess calendar has long been associated with Wijk-aan-Zee, where almost 50 years takes place a popular festival. This time in Wijk aan Zee among the 14 participants will perform a world champion and recent contender from Russia, which confirmed their class at the end of last year. In Doha Sergey Karjakin became the world blitz chess champion.

The organizers of the tournament in Wijk aan Zee once again decided to do some tours in other cities of the Netherlands. So, the party of the fifth round will be played January 19 in the football stadium “De Cape” in Rotterdam, and the 10-th round January 24 – at the Philharmonie Haarlem.
The main part of the tournament will take place in room “De Morian” in Wijk aan Zee, the last round is scheduled for 29 January, 18, 23 and 26 January, the weekend. The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves, then 50 minutes for 20 moves and 15 minutes before end of party with addition of 30 seconds per move starting from the first.
In the tournament of the second category, the winner will earn the right to play in the main competition, will also perform 14 players, including Russian Vladimir Dobrov. In the framework of the festival there will also be competitions among Amateurs and children.
Started in Beverwijk
This tournament will be the 79th time, although the Wijk aan Zee chess players compete only since 1968. In 1938 the competition was held in nearby Beverwijk. The most popular tournament in the Netherlands got in the early 60-ies, when it became involved leading grandmasters of the world and the contenders for the chess crown. The first Soviet winner of the tournament in Beverwijk began in 1960 Tigran Petrosian, who in three years will win the title in the match against Mikhail Botvinnik.
Later in Beverwijk and Wijk aan Zee defeated Lev Polugaevsky, Boris Spassky, Viktor Korchnoi, Mikhail Botvinnik, Mikhail tal, Anatoly Karpov, Vladimir Kramnik and Harry Kasparov.
In recent years, the tournament on the North sea coast, was chosen by Magnus Carlsen, who first played here in 2004 at the age of 13, and the first trophy he won in 2008. Just on account of Norwegian five titles, including victories in 2015 and 2016 In 2009, is a win and Karjakin, who represented the then Ukraine.
