Dedicated server

Dedicated Server – a kind of hosting, in which the client is fully provided with a separate physical machine (as opposed to virtual hosting). It is more flexible than virtual hosting, organizations have full control over the server (s), including the choice of the operating system, equipment, etc.Administration of servers, as a rule, is provided by the hosting company as an additional service. In some cases, a dedicated server may offer less cost and greater return on investment. Dedicated servers are most often located in data centers, where surplus power supplies and ventilation and air conditioning systems are provided. Unlike colocation, server hardware belongs to the vendor, and in some cases they will provide support for the operating system or applications.

Operating System Support

The availability, price, and staffing skills often determine which operating systems are offered on dedicated servers. Variations of Linux and Unix (open source operating system) are often included for free to the client. Commercial Microsoft Windows Server operating systems are provided under the terms of a special program called Microsoft SPLA. Red Hat Enterprise is a commercial version of Linux and is offered by hosting providers for a monthly fee. The monthly fee provides an update to the operating system through the Red Hat Network. Other operating systems are open source available on a royalty-free basis. These include CentOS ,Fedora Core , Debian , and many other Linux or BSD distributions from the FreeBSD , NetBSD , and OpenBSD systems .

Support for any of these operating systems, as a rule, depends on the tariff plan for the Dedicated server in Switzerland. Operating system support may include system kernel updates to provide the latest security features, patches, and system-wide vulnerability resolutions. The kernel update for the operating system includes kernel upgrades, service packs, application updates, and security updates that support the server securely.

Bandwidth and communication

In computer networks, bandwidth in bit / s sometimes means the speed of data transmission, the bandwidth of the channel, or the maximum throughput of the logical or physical channel in the digital communication system. For example, tests to determine bandwidth measure the maximum bandwidth of a computer network. The reason for such use is that according to the Hartley law, the maximum data transfer speed of a physical channel is proportional to its channel bandwidth, sometimes called bandwidth, spectral bandwidth, bandwidth or analog bandwidth.

The term “bandwidth” is often incorrectly used to describe the amount of data transferred to or from a website or server over a period of time. A more precise definition to indicate the maximum number of transmitted data for a month or a given period is a monthly data transfer.

To date, no standards have been set to clearly define the role of providers in the management of dedicated servers. This means that each vendor will use the standard terms, but will define them differently.

Server management may include some or all of the following:

  • Upgrade your operating system
  • App updates
  • Server monitoring
  • SNMP hardware monitoring
  • Monitoring applications
  • Application management
  • Support
  • Firewall services
  • Antivirus updates
  • Security Audit
  • DDoS protection and mitigation
  • Intrusion Detection
  • Backup and Restore
  • Recovery after failure
  • DNS hosting
  • Load balancing
  • Administration of databases
  • Performance settings
  • Install and configure the software
  • User management

Hosting providers can provide the following types of support:

  • Fully managed  – includes monitoring, software updates, reboots, and operating system updates.
  • Managed  – includes an average level of management, monitoring, upgrades and limited support. Customers can perform certain tasks.
  • Self-managed  – includes regular monitoring and some maintenance. Customers perform most operations and tasks on a dedicated server.
  • Inverted  – weak or non-participating service provider. Customers perform all maintenance, upgrades, fixes.

Hosting providers use extreme security measures to secure the data stored on the servers. Vendors often use different programs to scan systems and networks for detecting intruders, spammers, hackers, and other issues such as trojans, worms, and Crashers (sending multiple connections). Linux and Windows use different security software.

Vendors often have dedicated software packages on dedicated servers with a fixed monthly subscription fee. For many years, software makers have realized the significant market opportunities for combining their software with dedicated servers. Since then, they have begun to introduce price models that give hosting service providers the ability to buy and sell software based on lower monthly payments.

Microsoft offers software licenses through a program called Service Provider License Agreement. SPLA included in Windows operating systems, Microsoft SQL Server , Microsoft Exchange Server , Microsoft SharePoint and Shoutcast hosting, and many other server products.

ISPs typically offer the ability to select the software that you want to install on a dedicated server. Depending on the overall server download, this will include a choice of operating system, database, and specific applications. The server can be configured taking into account the specific needs of the customer and his requirements.Another kind of software is the so-called control panel. The control panel software includes many applications, server applications and automation tools that can be installed on a dedicated server. Control panels include integration into web servers, databases, programming languages, deployment of applications, server administration tasks, and include the ability to automate tasks through a web interface .

Most dedicated servers come bundled with the control panel. Control panels are often confused with management tools, but these control panels are actually a web automation tool designed to help automate the process of creating websites and managing the server.
