COLOGNE /Germany/ 19th may. /Spec. Q. TASS Rustam Sharafutdinov/. The joint application of Belarus and Latvia has helped these countries to stay ahead of Finland in the fight for the right to host the world hockey championship in 2021. Such opinion to journalists was expressed by the President of the International ice hockey Federation (IIHF ) Rene Fasel.

On Friday, the IIHF Congress decided that the world Cup 2021 will take Minsk and Riga.

“I have positive emotions from victories of the proposal of Latvia and Belarus. Finland was close to victory, but won the right to host the tournament in 2022. It’s like in hockey, everyone is fighting, but the winner can be only one,” said Fasel.

“They did a great job, Belarusians did filed a joint application with the Latvians. When the two small guy unite against one big, they have more chances of success”, – said the head of the IIHF.

“In 2022 would be difficult to hold the tournament because it is an Olympic year,’ said Fazel. Large countries are not interested in holding the championship in a year when the Olympics”.
