Groisman: Blockade of coal supplies is an unacceptable form of protest
The blockade of supplies of scarce coal from the area ATO is not acceptable as a form of protest.
The blockade of the supply deficit of anthracite coal, which is required to operate the power plants of Ukraine and was previously exported from the zone ATO, is unacceptable as a form of protest. This was during a meeting of the Council of national security and defence, said Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groisman.
“We are a democratic country, we respect the rights of all to peaceful protest, but I strongly perceive that you are absolutely illegal actions in order to manifest a protest,” – said Groisman.
He also suggested that in the future they need to enhance the responsibility for this blockade, which threatens the interests of the state.
“We must not allow the possibility of such blockades in the future, and must strengthen the responsibility of those who do.. . but this issue should be considered in the legal plane”, – he added.
As reported, in late January, Ukraine and some MPs initiated a blockade of the railway crossings, on which the anthracite is supplied from the temporarily uncontrolled territories for thermal power plants of Ukraine. According to the government, all supplies were stopped on February 10. According to the company – operator of the United power system “Ukrenergo”, the current supply of anthracite (842 thousand tons for February 12) can be used for 40 days.
The embargo has jeopardized reliable supply of electricity to some sectors and other consumers, therefore, on 15 February the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine at an extraordinary meeting adopted a decision on the introduction of emergency measures on the electricity market, which include reducing consumption of scarce coal of anthracitic group, ensuring full stability of the power system of the country.
President Petro Poroshenko said that the blockade is a threat for heat supply of several cities and works of metallurgy of Ukraine. The blockade also condemned representatives of the European Union and the United States.
