Lebanon hopes for Russia’s help in maintaining stability in the region

BEIRUT, September 13. /TASS/. Lebanon counts on Russia to preserve stability in the region. On this, as reported by Lebanese television, has declared to journalists by the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Lebanon Saad al-Hariri, after talks held in Sochi on Wednesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Lebanon is going through a difficult period because of the events happening in Syria and Iraq. However, Lebanon is one of the countries of the region, where it was possible to maintain stability . In this issue we want Russia was on our side, we need to enlist their support,” said the Prime Minister.

However, he noted that Lebanon attaches great importance to the military cooperation with Russia.

“We are partners with Russia in the common struggle against terrorism, for the special services between the two countries is a constant exchange of information,” he said.

“We are planning now to re-equip our army and security forces, and the issue we discussed with President Putin – said Hariri. – I think that relations with Russia defence cooperation will be good.”

Hariri added that the talks with President Putin focused on the development of bilateral relations between Russia and Lebanon.

“Of course, we discussed many regional issues, but I personally focused on how we can improve the economic cooperation, and military assistance, which we would like to receive from Russia”, – said the Prime Minister.

Lebanon is also interested in the fact that Russian companies participated in the development of its oil and gas fields offshore.

“We also want to attract Russian investors in major infrastructure projects, including the construction of Railways and airports, the expansion of the port of Tripoli, which may be an important harbour in the period of post-war reconstruction of Syria.” – said Hariri.

Hariri said that Putin is a “very positive” refers to the position of neutrality, which is Lebanon towards regional conflict.

“Putin is very happy that Lebanon was able to protect themselves from what is happening around him, and that reached a political agreement was by the stabilization of the situation in Lebanon,” he said.

In addition, the Prime Minister called the upcoming visit of Saudi Arabia’s king Salman in Russia is very important event for the Arab and Islamic world.

“The visit of king Salman in Moscow, undoubtedly, will be, and we are confident that he will bring positive results for the entire Arab and Islamic world,” Hariri said, noting the “historic character”, which are Russian-Saudi relations.

The head of the Lebanese government, like his late father, former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, closely associated with the Saudi Royal family and bears the title of Sheikh.
