Start-up The Ocean Cleanup will install the device, absorbing oceanic garbage, in the so-called Great Pacific garbage spot (accumulation of plastic and other debris in the North Pacific ocean). About the new technology, reports the edition Motherboard.

Assumes that garbage collection will not require human intervention. Push the garbage floating booms (boom) is ocean current, and wastes will flow into the storage tank. Wipe the device will be using the vehicles on a monthly basis. The length of the boom will be about a kilometer.

The company had previously planned to build them a few times longer, but then researchers realized that if you reduce the size they can reduce the cost of the invention up to several million dollars and to accelerate the installation schedule for two years. Initial calculations assumed that the project will bring together about 40% of plastic in the North Pacific ocean for ten years . New calculations promise to remove half of the plastic within five years.

The idea of purging has invented an eco-entrepreneur from the Netherlands Boyan Slat (Boyan Slat). He launched The Ocean Cleanup, when he was 19 years old. The company plans to profit from garbage collection, producing from the harvested raw materials from our own production – for example, sunglasses. His first design for a waste collection company plans to install in 2018.

At the same time, the journal of the American Association for the advancement of science (The American Association for the Advancement of Science) noted that not all members of the Oceanographic community approve of the idea of a young eco-entrepreneur. Critics of the initiative fear that high-tech clean-up project might distract other organizations from more effective measures to reduce the use of plastic.

Slet, says he first thought about the problem of ocean pollution plastic, when he was 16 years old. While scuba diving in Greece he saw more plastic bags than fish. Then he developed his first research project for school. After six months of study aerospace engineering the Slat dropped out of University and founded The Ocean Cleanup. Through speeches at TEDx Talk the founder of the company has raised $31.5 million for his invention. The company employs about 65 engineers and other staff.

The great Pacific garbage patch is formed by ocean currents, gradually collecting waste in one area. Estimated oceanographers, its area may range from 700 thousand to 1.5 million sq. km. According to the Foundation the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, by 2050 the oceans will be more plastic than fish, unless urgent action is taken.
