The Turkish Parliament has approved a key article of the bill giving additional powers to the President
The deputies of the Turkish Parliament on Thursday approved three key articles of the bill on amendments to the Constitution that expand the powers of the President, reports the EFE news Agency.
In particular, the idea is to give the opportunity for the President to issue decrees without submitting them to Parliament. The President will also be able to appoint Vice-presidents, Ministers and other senior officials. in addition, the President, in accordance with the approved articles, will have the right to be referred to the constitutional court the laws passed by Parliament. 12 of the 15 members of this court, the President of Turkey will be able to appoint himself.
The President will be allowed during the tenure of office and to remain the leader of his political party.
If Parliament approves the bill, it will be submitted to a national referendum. At the moment, the deputies approved 8 of the 18 articles of the draft law . Opponents of amending the Constitution note that such modifications will give very large powers to the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
