UN, January 13. /TASS/. The United States intends to seek UN adoption of measures to limit the missile program of Iran and to tighten the arms embargo without renegotiation of the nuclear deal with Tehran. This was stated on Friday by the U.S. permanent representative to the UN, Nikki Haley, commenting on the decision of President Donald trump to extend the easing of sanctions against Iran in accordance with the agreement concluded with the Islamic Republic in 2015.

According to the diplomat, the President “undertook a decisive step, making it clear that the United States will adhere to the terms of the Iranian nuclear deal, but will not tolerate dangerous and destabilizing behavior of Iran.” As stated by Haley, the U.S. hopes that other countries will support Washington in this matter .

“We are going to establish at the UN a new international cooperation in order to toughen action against Iranian missile activities, strengthen the arms embargo, which is violated by Iran to suppress the sponsorship of terrorism by Iran, as well as to shed light on human rights violations in Iran. All these steps can be taken beyond the nuclear deal, but if we do not seek international consensus for this, it will become even more clear that the nuclear deal is the obstacle to peace. We must not allow the Iranian regime to violate all sorts of international norms and UN resolutions, under the guise of a nuclear deal,” – said in a written statement, Haley, circulated by the permanent mission of the United States.

Earlier on Friday, trump said that the United States would cease participation in the agreement on Iran’s nuclear program, if it is not amended. He recalled that further extended the lifting of sanctions against Iran, however, according to him, this was done “merely to conclude an agreement with European allies in order to correct the horrible deficiencies of the Iranian nuclear deal.”

The nuclear agreement was signed in Vienna in summer 2015, its members, besides the U.S. and Iran are Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany. The agreement provides, inter alia, the refusal of Tehran from producing weapons-grade plutonium, the reduction of its existing enriched uranium in exchange for lifting of international sanctions. The term of the agreement is ten years, the current U.S. authorities believe this is too short a period.

After Iran has fulfilled its side of the agreement, which was confirmed by inspections of the International atomic energy Agency, the previous President of the USA Barack Obama on January 16, 2016 was removed from the sanctions imposed in connection with the recent attempts to develop nuclear weapons. However, many other limitations, for example, ballistic missiles, remained in force. However, trump October 13 last year refused to confirm Congress of Iranian compliance with nuclear deal. To make such a certification from the President of the United States requires national legislation.
