Ponomarev believes the letter from Yanukovich to Putin the key to legitimize the annexation of Crimea by Russia

Letter of ex-President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych to Russian President Vladimir Putin on 1 March 2014 asking to use the Russian Armed forces on the territory of Ukraine was the key to legitimize the annexation of Crimea by Russia, said the ex-Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Ilya Ponomarev.

“From my point of view, this is a key thing, it is a way to legitimize military aggression on the territory of Ukraine, and the main legal basis on which decisions about the use of the Armed forces of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine”, – he said during testimony in the Obolon district court of Kyiv on the case of treason Viktor Yanukovych.

I. Ponomarev believes that when this letter was read on February 28, an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation a member of Andrew Clisham, it held a “watershed” . In his opinion, adopted by the Federation Council of the Russian Federation on the basis of this letter, the decision on giving permission to use the Armed forces of the Russian Federation in Ukraine has already been submitted as a response to the appeal of the “President “allied” country to us, as we like to say “brotherly people”, to prevent a military coup and to protect the citizens of a friendly country”.

The ex-Deputy of the state Duma stated that the letter of Viktor Yanukovych, then, was not demonstrated in the Federation Council. “Klishas told about some details in final version of letter V. Yanukovich, which demonstrated Churkin to the United Nations, was not. I can only assume that this letter was prepared together with representatives of the Russian Federation, but to say it’s just I can’t,” he said.

I. Ponomarev said that the letter of Viktor Yanukovych, Russian President Vladimir Putin, he saw at the end of March – beginning of April 2014 with the help of his friend working in mission at the UN.

“I showed him, said that it was officially handed over to the UN Secretariat, circulated at the meeting of the UN security Council. And I started wondering what that letter was not on letterhead made, it was the signature of President Yanukovych and hand-dated March 1, 2014. But other official documents that I saw were all with matching coats of arms, letterhead, and the letter was just a piece of paper and that it differed” – drew the attention of the witness.
